I had the pleasure of meeting author, Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa at a literary venue. Her warmth and spirit was like a gentle ocean breeze. I am honored and humbled by her endorsement for Latina 50 Plus!

As a former teacher, librarian and novelist, I believe in the power of story. To find ours, we need go no further than our own neighborhoods and the trailblazers who,for years, have been quietly working to improve our community and society as a whole. Often their efforts have gone unacknowledged by the powers that be. We need to honor our own stories and the people who create them. It is imperative that we provide a historical record of achievement and give a voice and a face to the women who have provided exceptional service. We need them as approachable role models for our children and grandchildren. I applaud every effort to acknowledge the recipients of this award. Kudos to Maria Aponte and “Latina Empowerment: Fifty-Plus First Stories” project.
